A Husband To His Wife
April
11,
1865
Kate,
The rebels fly. On the 9th day of April, General Lee had to surrender his army to General U.S. Grant. I think the rebels are played out, and peace is at hand, so you must excuse my short letter this time for I have not much time to write at present. Tell your father I hope to be home soon, and I will bring him a soldier's topcoat. I cannot send anything home as we are much too close to the front this time.
Your loving husband
John
