In June of 1863, McLean's was just one of many businesses that faced economic devastation when General Jenkins's Confederate Cavalry came to town. Thinking quickly, William McLean hid his leather goods to avoid losing them to looters. Gristmill owner Thomas Blair wasn't fast enough - he suffered a $30,000 loss at the hands of the Confederates.
